History
The Father John V. Doyle School is the parish school of Saints John and Paul Church in Coventry, Rhode Island. Established in 1965, the school was founded to give children in the growing parish an opportunity for a quality education in a setting that promoted growth in the parish community as disciples of Christ.
In 1965 classes began on the nursery and kindergarten level in the basement of the church. In September of 1966 the new school building was opened with a registration of almost 150 students in grades nursery, kindergarten, four, five, and six. Sisters of Mercy, who lived in the convent on parish grounds, staffed all faculty positions with the exception of nursery and kindergarten. In the two years that followed the opening of the school, a seventh and eighth grade were added to serve those students in the school that had graduated to the next level. It was also during these years that additional lay teachers were hired.
During the first half of the 1970’s the decision was made to expand services in the school. A first grade was started in 1972, followed by second grade in 1973. With the establishment of a third grade in 1974 the school completed the nursery to eighth grade format that has been maintained to this day.
